What is the purpose of punishment?

In last week's class we discussed the idea of divine punishment, both individually and collective. Something that we didn't get time to discuss would be the purpose of punishment. The role that punishment serves would seem to dictate the form that it would take.

Is punishment a deterrent? Is it an automatic response to a behavior, like indigestion after eating bad food? Or, is divine punishment an expression of disapproval from a theistic personality. Think about what you believe and then compare that idea with examples we find in life. What do you think?
