  1. To me punishment is the connection one makes between a misdeed and something bad that has happened to the individual. The punishment does not come from on high. There is really no connection between the misdeed and the perceived punishment. The reason I think this way is that I do not believe that there is a G-d who concerns Itself with individual's lives. There was a force that started the universe, and I believe that force has no interest in what occurs in our world. That is why there have been inquisitions, pogroms and the shoah. Ellen Meyer
